A botanical garden was established permanently at the University of Rostock for the first time in 1885, after several attempts at founding it had failed, by Karl Ritter von Goebel . In the period between 1935 and 1939, the 7.8 hectare outdoor area of the Botanical Garden on Hamburger Strasse in the Hansaviertel was set up by Arno Lehmann and Erich Rulsch.

Almost 7,000 plant species are cultivated in the botanical garden. The maintenance and expansion is ensured primarily through the exchange of seeds and plants with other botanical gardens. The greenhouses in the original area of the Botanical Garden on Doberaner Strasse were still in use until 2009, but have not been open to the public in recent years due to the poor state of construction. In 2009, the new Loki-Schmidt greenhouses with 400 m² of space and tropical crops were inaugurated on the site on Hamburger Strasse.

The botanical garden includes:

A dammed watercourse, the Kayenmühlengraben, flows through the botanical garden and serves as a demonstration of wet biotopes such as wet meadow, moor, pond and stream. A rock garden with raised walls depicts the history of useful plants in northeast Germany from the Neolithic to the present day. Guided tours and events, including the Low German Book Day, take place in the botanical garden on a regular basis.

In addition to university teaching, teachers for high schools are trained with students of all age groups. In the “Unigarten macht Schule” project, lessons on the subjects of plant diversity and environmental education are carried out with kindergartens and school classes.

A non-profit association, the Freundeskreis Botanischer Garten in Rostock, promotes the garden and organizes lectures, exhibitions, practical demonstrations and excursions to similar facilities.

The garden is open to a limited extent in the winter months from December to February.
