Botequim (Lisbon)

The Botequim (German: Schenke ) is a bar in the Graça district of the Portuguese capital Lisbon .

history

In 1968 the poet and politician Natália Correia opened the Bar Botequim together with Isabel Meireles, Júlia Marenha and Helena Roseta at Largo da Graça and proclaimed it as a place for free togetherness. In the biography of Correia, who is counted among the most important Portuguese, Botequim has a special meaning as a political meeting place. At the time of the Estado Novo , it became an important meeting point for the intellectual and political life of the capital. Literature was read out loud, a piano stood between the salon and the regulars' table. Even after the Carnation Revolution in 1974, it remained an important meeting point for artists.

After Correia's death in the spring of 1993, the bar closed. In autumn 2010, two young people reopened it, with the sympathy of the country's media. The entrance and counter are original. A portrait of Correia hangs behind the counter. The bar is now also internationally known as a well-known address that is valued for its special flair.
