The Botswana International University of Science and Technology ( BIUST for short ; German for example: Botswana International University of Science and Technology ) is a state university in Botswana . The campus is located in Palapye . The university was founded in 2005, but did not start teaching until 2012.

history

The University of Botswana was founded in 1982 , at that time the only university in the country. In 2004 the President's Ordinance CAB.33 (B) / 2004 determined that the areas of science and technology should be outsourced to a new university. The city of Palapye was chosen as the seat, where the university was given a 2500-hectare, fenced-in area south of the city. The relevant law was passed by parliament in December 2005. The first Vice-Chancellor was the Ghanaian -US scientist Kweku Bentil. For Chancellor was Festus G. Mogae , President of Botswana to 2008, was appointed. The aim was to have a "world-class" university.

In 2011 the contract with the Ghanaian -US Vice Chancellor Kweku Bentil expired; subsequently the office was administered on a provisional basis. It was discussed whether the university should not be used as a technical college (for example: " College for Technology"), especially since the need for local scientists was estimated to be low. The cost over the next ten years was estimated at $ 1.3 billion. In 2012, due to delays in construction, teaching began in Oodi north of the capital Gaborone , over 200 kilometers from Palapye. The building of the College of Applied Arts and Technology was used for this. From 2014, the building was to be used as a UNESCO Center , but the BIUST's move to Palapye was delayed.

In 2015, the Nigerian -US Vice Chancellor Hillary Inyang , who had been in office since 2013, resigned from his post. In 2016, the university received Otlogetswe Totolo for the first time a Motswana as Vice Chancellor.
