Bovo (ship type)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bovo (after the Italian word for "ox") was a one-and-a-half- masted sailing ship for coastal Sicily until the end of the 19th century . It was also known as the bull boat . The ship was up to 18 m long and rigged with Latin sails. The very long bowsprit led a so-called flying jib . As a cargo ship , the Bovo could carry up to 40 tons of cargo. Ships of this type were also used in fishing. The Italian Navy also occasionally used this type of ship, which was then armed with a bow gun.
