Brüchte even Brüchten or Brüchtengeld were in the Middle Ages and the early modern period by the lower courts for minor offenses imposed fines or payments in kind .
The fines imposed by the court courts were a popular source of income for the estate administration, which was also used to finance celebrations and facilities for the commons . The term Bruchten was common in the Rhineland and Westphalia .
The word comes from brôke , Bröke ( ndd. ) = "(Right) break", "to break (the right)". It comes from the same root as today's words " crime ", "have done something wrong".
