The Bridge of German Unity is one of seven bridges over the Main in Würzburg . Three lanes lead over them, as well as a pedestrian and a bicycle path on both sides of the road.

location

The Bridge of German Unity is the northernmost Main Bridge in Würzburg. At river kilometer 251.23 it connects the district of Zellerau on the left bank of the river with the Äußere Pleich on the right of the Main, part of the Würzburg old town. In addition to the Main, the bridge also spans the basin of the Old Harbor on the right-hand side of the Main and the Main meadows on the left bank of the river. The next bridge to the south is the Friedensbrücke, about 400 meters away .

history

Construction of the bridge began in 1990, and the inauguration took place on October 3, 1992, the day of German unity , from which the bridge owes its name. This makes it the youngest bridge over the Main in Würzburg. In the run-up to the construction, there had been numerous public discussions about the influence the completed bridge would have on the cityscape; the first draft had provided for a significantly higher pylon , but as a compromise it was ultimately shortened to the limit of what was technically feasible.

construction

Pylon of the Bridge of German Unity

The Bridge of German Unity is a cable-stayed bridge with a total length of 239 meters. The height of the pylon and the geometry of the rope harp were given to the construction company by the authorities. Since the pylon had been shortened by 14 meters compared to the first draft of the bridge, the ropes of the originally planned fourth layer were added to the third layer. The ropes therefore only span around 60 percent of the two main sections of the bridge, each 75 meters long, which has a negative effect on the structure of the structure. The two pylon legs are made of reinforced concrete and are encased above the roadway by a load-bearing jacket made of 10 millimeter thick sheet steel.

The ropes are anchored in the bridge's longitudinal girders at a distance of just one meter to the left and right of the roadway and are therefore protected from the impact of vehicles by sloping reinforced concrete bases . The footpaths and bike paths are extended around the pylon stems in a pulpit-like manner.

The foreland bridge, which spans the Mainwiesen left of the river with three fields, is supported by two pairs of round supports. A pillar disc supports the bridge on the left bank of the Main.
