The founding of the Brühl University Printing Works dates back to 1750. As a Giesser Wochen-Blatt , Johann Philipp Krieger presents the newspaper to the "inclined reader". The newspaper was discontinued in the same year and re-established in 1764. The forerunner of today's Gießener Anzeiger is the eleventh oldest newspaper in the world that is still in existence today.

In 1829 the book and lithographer Georg Daniel Brühl took over the printing and editing of the paper. In 1834 he founded the Brühl book and stone printing company . From now on, the company's fortunes have remained linked to the name Brühl to this day. At the beginning of the 20th century, state-of-the-art typography machines, a 16-page newspaper rotary press , high-speed and platen printing machines and an illustration machine were introduced. In 1943 the Gießener Anzeiger was banned, in 1944 and 1945 the printing house was completely destroyed by bombs. But the printing company and publishing house recovered quickly and after the license requirement was lifted, the Gießener Anzeiger appeared again in 1949 .

Due to the proximity of the universities of Gießen and Marburg , Brühlsche was one of the few printing houses in Europe that mastered the scientific formula set . At the end of the 1960s, one of the first web offset presses in Germany was added and the changeover from lead typesetting to computer-controlled typesetting took place. Expansion to a large bookbindery. In 1997, Brühl was the first German printing company to receive FSC certification . An eco-circle was set up and the continuous improvement process began. In 2003 the company was separated into two legally independent companies. From now on, the printing company operates as Brühlsche Universitätsdruckerei and the newspaper publisher as Gießener Anzeiger Verlags GmbH & Co KG . The managing director of both companies is Wolfgang Maaß, who has been President of the IHK Gießen-Friedberg since 2002 .
