Brachidontes is agenus of mussels from the family of mussels (Mytilidae). The genus has beenknownsince the Jura .

features

The housings are elongated with an angled or strongly curved dorsal edge and straight ventral edge: the greatest height is behind the center of the housing. The front end is tightly rounded, the rear end broadly rounded. The vertebrae are near the front end. The ligament is comparatively short. The lock has a few dysodontic teeth in front of and behind the ligament. Simple, tooth-like notches can be found behind the ligament up to the angle of the dorsal margin. The surface is covered with more or less strong, radial ribs that can split at the edge of the housing.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The types of the genus are distributed worldwide. They come from tropical warm waters to cold temperate waters.

Taxonomy

The taxon Brachidontes was established in 1840 by William Swainson . Type species through monotype is Modiola sulcata Lamarck, 1819, a synonym of Arca modiolus Linné, 1767. The following species are currently recognized by the World Register of Marine Species :

The name Brachidontes is derived from the Greek brachys = short, odontes = teeth. It is the type genus of the subfamily Brachidontinae Nordsieck, 1969.
