Brahmachari

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Brahmachari (also brahmacarya Sanskrit: “the same way of life as Brahma ”) is a spiritual student in the post- Vedic Indian religions (such as Hinduism ) who has vowed abstinence for a certain time. Women who have made this vow are called brahmacharini .

The vow of celibacy ( chastity similar to the vita consecrata ) means to refrain from sexual activities, eating meat, intoxicating substances and gambling. The goal is moksha , a liberation from the chain of rebirth and in the Buddhist adaptation from attachment . A sannyasin has made a final vow of renunciation of the world.
