The Brandenburg Gate , also called Neubrandenburger Tor , in Altentreptow is a Gothic city gate and one of originally three gates of the city wall that surrounded the city.

history

The city wall of Altentreptow with its three city gates was built around 1450. The city wall and the supplementary wall were gradually torn down after the Thirty Years' War . The southern Brandenburg Gate and the Demminer Gate , which at that time still had a high tower, were preserved. The mill gate was demolished in 1844.

The Brandenburg Gate, also called Neubrandenburger Tor, is made of bricks . A stepped gable characterizes the front. On the field side (i.e. outside) portcullis pillars support the five-story tower up to the third floor. Due to its height and the border between the city and Mecklenburg, it also served as a watchtower. The gate with its ogival passage and the tower is a five-story brick building with a gable roof . The typical brick building was on the upper floors on all sides of an aperture jewelry .

The city gate later served as a small prison. In 1895 the prison system was modernized and an annex was built right next to the gate, which was a court prison until 1929. There were apartments in the annex. Around 1984 a stabilizing floor slab was installed. The building was now used for cultural purposes.

The gate is located in the south of the city on Rudolf-Breitscheid-Straße. After 1945 Fritz Simiot wrote the poem "At the old Brandenburg Gate" about the gate.

Monument protection

The remains of the city fortifications with the Neubrandenburg gate tower, Demmin gate tower, city wall and ramparts are under monument protection (see list of architectural monuments in Altentreptow , no.83).
