Known family members

  • Melchior Lukas Brant († 1622 in Husum ) worked since 1566 as an assistant to (Harmen) Grapengeter, who had founded a bell foundry in Husum. In 1581 Brant took over the business. He made about 40 to 50 bells and many baptismal fonts. In 1590 he created all the pumps, pipes, valves and similar parts for the Husum "water art". This supplied the Husum Castle, fountains and fish ponds with water. During his lifetime he was considered a regional master of his field. Well-known spellings of his name were "Melcher Grapengeter", "Melcher Lukas", "Lukas Brann" and "Lucas Melchior Grapengeter".
Melchior Lukas Brant had two sons named Peter and Lukas.
  • Peter Brant (buried on June 9, 1653 in Husum) took over his father's bell foundry in 1620. Up to 1653 he was verifiably casting 25 bells and employed his brother Lukas as an assistant. Around 1610 he married a now unknown woman, with whom he had their son Balzer Melchersen.
  • Balzer Melchersen Brant , also Balthasar Melchior (* 1612 in Husum) acquired the citizenship of Flensburg around 1634. He maintained a foundry here until 1661. From 1661 to 1663 he worked as a bell founder in Denmark. There is evidence that he created twelve bells in Schleswig-Holstein.
Brant married Katharina von Horsten († 1660 in Flensburg ) in 1638 . Their son Rudolf (* 1645 in Flensburg) moved to Jutland , where he also cast bells.
