Brown beer

Brown beer is an outdated term for barley beers .

In several regions in Central Europe, only barley and wheat were permitted as brewing grain for centuries . To distinguish between white beers , which are brewed from wheat and barley, simple, pure barley beers were called brown beer. In comparison to wheat beers, brown beers were regarded as a simple everyday drink. In Bavaria, from the 18th century onwards, brown beer was a strong, bottom-fermented barley beer, while every top-fermented beer was called wheat beer.
