The brown dwarf squirrel or black-eared squirrel ( Nannosciurus melanotis ) is a small squirrel from Southeast Asia. It is native to the islands of Sumatra , Java and Borneo as well as some of the smaller islands in the area.
features
With a head body length of 9 cm and a tail length of 7 cm, this squirrel is no larger than a mouse. The velvety fur is variably colored, different gray and brown tones occur, often with a reddish overflight. The white facial markings are striking.
Way of life
The brown dwarf squirrel is a diurnal inhabitant of the tropical rainforest . Here it lives in small groups of two or three individuals who live on the ground or at least near the ground.
Systematics
Today the brown dwarf squirrel is classified as the only representative of its genus Nannosciurus . In older literature, the Asian dwarf squirrels ( Exilisciurus ) are also found in the same genus, but these were described as a separate genus by Joseph Curtis Moore in 1958 .
According to the current state of knowledge, the similarities are only superficial, and both taxa are not particularly closely related.
