The Asian dwarf squirrels ( Exilisciurus ) are a common genus of squirrels in Southeast Asia . However, they are to be separated from these: According to molecular genetic studies, Exilisciurus is the sister group of all other beautiful squirrels .

Nevertheless they resemble the brown dwarf squirrel in external characteristics and way of life. Their head body length is 7 to 10 cm, plus 5 to 8 cm of tail. Only the African miniature squirrel is smaller among the squirrels . The weight is between 15 and 35 g. The coat color is red-brown, brown or gray on top. The animals are a bit lighter underneath. All species inhabit dense tropical rainforests .

Systematics

The Asian dwarf squirrels were previously placed in the genus Nannosciurus , but were described as a genus of its own by Joseph Curtis Moore in 1958 .
