The Braunwald via ferrata leads in three sections over the EggstOCK in the north of Braunwald in the Glarus Alps in Switzerland . The three sections of the via ferrata are of different difficulty, with the first part being the easiest and the last part the most difficult.

After each section there is an option to exit, so that the variations "1st part", "1st and 2nd part" and "all three parts" result.

Emergence

The sections of the Braunwald via ferrata were built and opened one after the other.

The Braunwald via ferrata was financed entirely through donations, the most obvious donation being the "Charlotte Bridge" between Vorder and Mittler Eggstock in the second part of the via ferrata, which was sponsored by the Canadian town of Charlotte.

Walking times

The walking times Gumen - Gumen are approximately:

  • 1st part: 2–4 hours
  • 1st and 2nd part: 4¼ - 6¼ hours
  • all three parts: 4½ - 6½ hours

Route (Gumen-Gumen)

Beginning at the Gumen mountain inn (1901 m), you first head north-east to the Gumengrat, which you follow in a westerly direction to the start of the via ferrata at the foot of the Leiterggs (2148 m).

The first part of the Braunwald via ferrata begins here. It leads 170 meters through its wall to the Leitergg. After crossing the Leitergg, there is an option to get out over the southern slope of the Leitergg.

Now the second part of the via ferrata begins with a 139 m high ascent to the Vorder Eggstock. From there it goes over the Charlotte Bridge and the ridge to the Mittler Eggstock. This is followed by a section that leads without a wire rope safety device but with orange-blue path markings over simple meadow terrain to the western end of the Mittler Eggstock. There is a refuge on this meadow, which provides optimal protection against lightning strikes, but should only be used for a stay in an emergency. This is followed by a short descent to the fork in the road, where you can either follow the exit of the second part or cross to access the third part.

The third part of the via ferrata is partly overhanging and, despite its relatively low height of only around 60 meters, very strenuous throughout. Its difficulty should therefore not be underestimated. When you reach the lower of the two peaks of the Hinter Eggstock, a blue and white marked mountain path leads to the red and white marked path below the Bützi, on which you get back to Gumen.
