Bridal stones from Schmölau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bridal Stones of Schmölau are a protected natural monument northwest of the village of Schmölau in the municipality of Rosche ( Uelzen district , Lower Saxony ).

One of the stones is in the area of the Schmölau district. The second stone lies in the border ditch between Schmölau and Nievelitz . Both stones are granite stones that came from Norway to the Drawehn ridge during the last ice age .

legend

According to a legend , the standing stone is often equated with the bridegroom, the lying stone with the bride. Within the legend it is disputed whether the bride came from Nievelitz or Schmölau and did not want to be married in the other village. In any case, she jumped off the car at the border and, as she wished, turned to stone rather than marrying. Out of lovesickness the bridegroom then jumped after and also turned to stone. According to another version, the bride would rather be dead than marry this man. As a result, both were turned to stone by lightning.

The standing stone is so deep in the earth that it could not be moved when it was supposedly moved in 1936. The natural monument was made easily accessible again in 2011 as part of the "72-hour campaign" by the Lower Saxony rural youth .
