Brawlhalla

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brawlhalla is a free fighting computer game developed by Blue Mammoth Games for Microsoft Windows , macOS , PlayStation 4 , Xbox One and Nintendo Switch .

history

The game was shown for the first time in April 2014 at PAX East and went into alpha that same month . An open beta took place in November 2015, followed by the game's release in October 2017.

On March 5, 2018, the Brawlhalla developer-publisher Blue Mammoth Games was taken over by the video game publisher Ubisoft and as a result Rayman joined as a guest fighter on November 6, 2018, the day the game was released for Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.

On July 6, 2018, Ars Technica published an article containing exact player numbers for Steam games obtained through a leak as a result of a "hole" in the API. This leak showed that Brawlhalla ranks 24th in terms of player numbers on Steam with a total of 8,646,824 players from all games that are equipped with the Steam Achievements System.

Gameplay

Most of Brawlhalla's game modes are about knocking your opponent off the stage - similar to Super Smash Bros. -; this can be achieved through repeated attacks. If a player is kicked off the stage, they lose a life. Either the last standing player (the one with at least one life left) or the player with the most points wins the game.

The game can be played both locally and online. Players can compete 1: 1 against each other. You can also play 2: 2 with a partner. Brawlhalla also has several Casua modes: Free-For-All, 1v1 Strikeout, Experimental 1v1, Capture the Flag and a new Featured mode every week. Free-For-All is a chaotic mode in which four players have to beat each other out of the arena. Experimental 1v1 allows players to test upcoming features. Custom games can be hosted online and locally and support up to eight players per game, experimental maps and regional specifics. You can join a clan with friends, these clans can in turn advance in level and gain experience from all members.

During a game, weapons fall randomly from the sky and can be picked up by the players. All characters in Brawlhalla can use two of a total of twelve weapons to fight one another. All characters also have unarmed attacks. Gadgets like bombs, mines and spike balls also fall from the sky. Weapons can also be thrown to interrupt an opponent's moves or to make it difficult for them to get back on stage. Each character has four statistics assigned to it: strength, dexterity, defense, and speed. The combination of these stats determines a character's strengths and weaknesses and affects how they are played. It can easily be modified by attitudes that shift a point from one statistic to another.

purchases

Each week, Brawlhalla has a rotation of 8 selectable characters that newer players can use for free. That number of characters with free rotation increased from 6 to 8 in late 2018, likely as a result of how many new characters were added to the game at the time. Generally, a new character is released every nine or so weeks; currently there are 47 characters. In order to purchase characters in full, Brawlhalla has an in-game shop where players have the option to use the currency earned through regular play, daily missions, and level-ups. Alternatively, players can purchase all existing and future characters through microtransactions.

Other products can also be bought here, in a currency called mammoth coins. This currency is won by buying it with real money. Mammoth Coins can be used for products such as character skins, weapon skins, and mockery that can be used in games. There are also skins in the stores that are updated every few weeks. These chests feature many of the same skins that can be purchased in-store at a discounted price, while offering 2 to 3 skins exclusive to this chest. These chests cost 100 mammoth coins and when purchased they randomly give you one of the offered skins.

A few characters have skins that serve as guest characters from other franchises, including Rivals of Aether, Shovel Knight , Rayman , Hellboy , Adventure Time, and Wrestler from WWE .

E-sports

While the community has been holding smaller events since the start of the closed beta, Blue Mammoth Games is now also organizing its own official competitions.

In May 2016 they started with the Brawlhalla Championship Series or "BCX". It was a series of 21 weekly online tournaments. The tournaments took place on both North American and European servers, where players competed in 1v1 and 2v2 modes. For each tournament, a prize pool of $ 1,000 was split among the top eight players. In addition, regional qualifying tournaments were held 1: 1, in which the winner of each regional event received a plane ticket and a hotel room for the World Cup.

World Championship 2017

The Brawlhalla World Championship became an annual event in 2017. The format set up as the final of the Brawlhalla Circuit was a hybrid invitational / open tournament in which 24 of the top 32 places were assigned to players around the world by performing the best in official competitions. The remaining 8 slots could be won in the open World Cup tournament.

The prize pool was doubled to a total of $ 100,000, split evenly between competitions 1v1 and 2v2. The event again took place at the Cobb Galleria in Atlanta, United States, with players from all over the world lining up from November 3rd to 5th. It is noteworthy that the 1v1 world champion 2016 Zack "LDZ" Janbay won for the second time in a row, while the 2v2 championship was won by Zack "Boomie" Bielamowicz and Ngwa "Remmy" Nforsi.

World Championship 2018

The third annual Brawlhalla World Championship was announced in early 2018. It was an open tournament with players set based on official tournament rankings. It took place November 16-18 at DreamHack in Atlanta. Similar to the 2017 World Cup, there was again a prize pool of $ 100,000, which was evenly divided between the 1v1 and 2v2 tournaments. The championship was played alongside tournaments of other popular fighting games like Super Smash Bros. Melee, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Tekken 7, and more. The 1v1 world title was won by Stephen "Sandstorm" Myers and the 2v2 world title went to Jonatan "Cake" Övragård and Aleksi "Addymestic" Sillanpää from Team PHZ.
