Breachacha Castle

Breachacha Castle , alternative spelling Breacacha , also Breachacha House or Coll House , is a castle on the Scottish Hebridean island of Coll . It is located in the southeast of the island near a rocky cliff at the head of the bay of Loch Breachacha . In 1971, Breachacha Castle was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category A.

history

The castle was built around 1750 by the Lairds of Coll. It replaced the neighboring Old Breachacha Castle from the 1430s . John Stewart of Glenbuckie acquired the castle, which was originally built on a square base, in 1856, increased it and added further extensions. The interior of the building was also largely modernized in this context, so that only a few fixtures from the 17th century have survived today. In October 1773 the writers Samuel Johnson and James Boswell spent a few days at Breachacha Castle. The building was empty between 1944 and 1968. After a buyer was found, parts were restored to a habitable condition and the rooms on the ground floor were separated into two separate units. Electricity facilities have also been added. After the degree of preservation deteriorated significantly in the following decades, Breachacha Castle was described as conditionally habitable when it was transferred to a new owner in 1997. Extensive restoration work began in 1999 and continues to this day. In June 2012 the restoration of the main building was finished and accepted. The owners live on the upper floor of the main building.
