Old Breachacha Castle , alternatively spelled Breacachadh , is a castle on the Scottish Hebridean island of Coll . It is located in the southeast of the island on a cliff at the head of the bay of Loch Breachacha . In 1971, Breachacha Castle was included in the British List of Monuments in Category A. It is considered to be the best preserved and least structurally altered castle in the Hebrides .

history

The construction period of Breachacha Castle is not clearly certain. However, there is evidence that construction was carried out in the 1430s after John Maclean, son of Lachlan Lubanach Maclean of Duart , received rule of Coll. The earliest written evidence of the castle's existence is a document from 1542. Alterations and extensions were made in the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1750 the MacLeans built the new Breachacha Castle nearby to replace the old castle. Nevertheless, both buildings were still used in parallel for some time. According to records, the roof of Old Braechacha Castle was still intact in 1843. In 1856 the lands were finally sold to John Lorne Stewart and the castle was empty by then at the latest. Between 1930 and 1938, the building was renovated to stop its deterioration. Beginning in the 1960s, dilapidated or collapsed elements were replaced in the original style and the interior expanded to meet modern living requirements. The building was subjected to a technical examination beforehand. The construction work was completed in 1993.
