Breakout was a Polish blues , folk - rock band.
history
Breakout was founded in 1968 in Rzeszów by members of the band Blackout. Just one year later, Breakout landed at number one on the Polish hit list with the song Gdybyś kochał, hej ("Did you love ..."). The song was held in the folk-rock style and at the same time picked up influences from Polish folk music. In what was then the People's Republic of Poland, this was a popular device to make rock music, officially frowned upon as an “imitation of western lifestyle”, acceptable to the censors . In addition to Breakout, the band Skaldowie and the singer and multi-instrumentalist Czesław Niemen also used this solution.
The musical style of Breakout was mainly shaped by the front man Tadeusz Nalepa and was based on a mixture of blues and folk with influences from rock music. In addition to the characteristic guitar playing by Nalepa, the music was determined by the voice of the singer Mira Kubasińska. The Polish texts of the poet Bogdan Loebl contributed significantly to the artistic appearance of the band . In addition to love songs and rhymes based on folk music, Loebl's lyrics dealt with sensitive topics such as environmental destruction ( Takie moje miasto jest ), corruption and emigration. The lyricist Loebl was consistently listed as a band member on all Breakout LPs.
As early as 1970, after only one LP was published, Breakout came under criticism of the communist regime for the openly non-conformist lifestyle and clothing style of the musicians as well as for the alleged “pro-Western attitude” and was banned from radio and performance for several months. In 1971, however, the band was able to release the album Blues .
Breakout subsequently released LPs on the official market of the VR Poland and toured internationally, among others in the GDR and USSR, but also in the Netherlands.
The band officially broke up in 1982. Tadeusz Nalepa continued his solo career until his death in 2007.
