The Brechthaus is the birthplace of the poet, playwright and writer Bertolt Brecht in the old town of Augsburg and is now a museum and memorial for him.

The building and today's museum

Bertolt Brecht was born in the house Auf dem Rain 7 on February 10, 1898. The house is an old file carver in Augsburg's Lechviertel , a simple building typical of the old craftsmen's quarter. The Hintere Lech flows past directly in front of the house ; behind the house is the Mittlere Lech. A few meters downstream, the two canals merge to form the Stadtbach .

Plaque

Brecht only spent a short time in the house, as his parents moved there in 1900. Brecht lived his entire childhood and youth in a different address in Augsburg, Bleichgasse 2 on Oblatterwall . Nevertheless, the house where he was born was chosen for the museum project, on the one hand because of the symbolism of the place of birth and on the other because of a memorial plaque that had already been placed there . The plaque was attached to today's Brechthaus in 1960 on a private initiative.

The honor of Brecht, who died in 1956, at a worthy memorial in Augsburg got off the ground slowly and took a long time. After the city of Augsburg had acquired the house and the decision for the "Brechthaus" project had been made, the planning took almost eight years and the renovation another two years. In 1998 the Brechthaus was opened as a museum and memorial for the writer.
