The Breiðamerkurjökull is a great glacier of Vatnajökull in southeast Iceland .
Towards the end of the 19th century the glacier tongue reached almost to the sea, now it is more than 3 km away from the coast. Lakes such as the Breiðárlón and the famous Jökulsárlón have formed on the edge of the glacier .
