Brent Michael Davids

Brent Michael Davids (born June 4, 1959 in Madison / Wisconsin ) is an American composer of Indian origin. He is a member of the Stockbridge Indians ( Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians of Wisconsin ) from the Mahican tribe .

Davids studied composition at Northern Illinois University and Arizona State University . In his works he combines elements of Indian music with Western composition techniques, whereby he also uses traditional Indian musical instruments. They have been performed by ensembles such as the Kronos Quartet , the Miro Quartet , the Vocal Ensemble Chanticleer , the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra . He received u. a. Awards from ASCAP , Rockefeller Foundation , Bush Foundation, and McKnight Foundation .

On the 25th anniversary of the Kennedy Center's opening in 1996, his piece Canon Sunrise , a work commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra, was performed. In 1998 Davids was invited to Robert Redford's Sundance Institute Film Lab , where he composed the music for Sherman Alexie's Indian Killer . In the same year he produced a CD with Joe Myers with songs for quartz crystal flute and guitar under the title Joe & the Blue Butterfly .

In 2001 the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra performed David's Powwow Symphony as a forty-minute powwow ceremony with dancers and master of ceremonies. Davids made a television documentary about the performance. In 2002 he composed the music for Alexie's film The Business of Fancydancing . Davids is working on the opera The Trial of Standing Bear with the librettist Marcie Rendon and the Zeitgeist ensemble .
