La Bressola ( Catalan pronunciation : [ɫə βɾəsɔɫə] - German: "the cradle") is an established in 1976 Catalan Cultural Association in to France belonging Northern Catalonia , which is a network Catalan-language schools operate. The aim is to preserve and spread the Catalan language in northern Catalonia.

history

The Bressola organization was founded on the model of the Basque SEASKA in May 1976. On September 16 of the same year the first school was founded in Perpignan . In the first few years the Bressola had financial difficulties because it was not supported by the state. She secures herself financially through individual donations and events.

In 1982 there were divisions within the Bressola, which led to a hunger strike by some members.

In 1995 the state decided to pay the teachers if the school in question had already existed for 5 years. The organization has to finance the schools for the first 5 years. This agreement led to the growth of Bressola, which opened 4 schools in 1996.

The first Collège was opened in 2003.

The Bressola organization has 6 schools and a college. It is not possible to spend school time in the Bressola system up to the Abitur.

Methods

Immersion

Since the majority of students often only speak French at home , school is often the only place where students are surrounded by Catalan and use it. It is therefore important to schools to give this language as much space as possible. In Bressola, Catalan is not only a language learned (such as French or English at a German school), but also the language of learning, i.e. the language in which lessons are taught. Care is also taken to ensure that the children communicate and play with each other in Catalan.

Cross-year learning

In schools, children of different ages are in the same class, but work on different tasks that are adapted to their level and corresponding to their grade. The children should support each other in their learning process.
