bresthaft

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term bresthaft means frail , sickly . It was mainly used for disabled people in southern Germany and Austria until the 1990s . It primarily referred to people with a physical disability , but was also used for people with a mental disability or multiple disabilities . In some cases, old people , as well as sick and otherwise frail people, were referred to as frail.

Since the term is considered derogatory, it has been removed from legislation and replaced with less discriminatory wording. In general usage, however, it is still common in some regions, albeit with a decreasing trend.
