Bretton Woods, New Hampshire
Bretton Woods is the southeasternmost borough of the city of Carroll in the state of New Hampshire , USA . Carroll had 763 inhabitants in 2010 and an area of 130 km². While the place name Carroll is more of local interest, Bretton Woods gained international fame through the Bretton Woods Conference , which took place July 1-22, 1944. As a result of the conference, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund came into being.
The destination is surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest and is located at the foot of Mount Washington , which is the highest mountain in the region at 1917 m. The Mount Washington Cog Railway , a rack railway that opened in 1866/69, leads to the top of the mountain . Bretton Woods' main attraction is the Mount Washington Hotel on Route 302 , an imposing building built in 1902 that dominates the area; it is equipped with a golf course and was the venue for the Bretton Woods conference. During the Great Depression, the hotel was less frequented, but gained new prominence through the conference. The place is particularly popular as a winter sports center . Especially in the Rosebrook Mountains around Bethlehem, south of Bretton Woods, there are slopes for both cross-country and downhill athletes.
