Brewer Phillips
Brewer Phillips (born November 16, 1924 in Coila , Mississippi , † August 30, 1999 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American blues guitarist. He became known as a member of The HouseRockers , the backing band for Hound Dog Taylor .
life and work
Phillips grew up on a plantation where he was introduced to the blues by Memphis Minnie at a young age and where he heard many blues greats live. After moving to Memphis, he became a professional musician, playing with Bill Harvey and Roosevelt Sykes . In 1960 he became a member of the HouseRockers , the band of Hound Dog Taylor. Since the band played without a bass, he often mimicked the bass lines on his guitar. After Taylor's death in 1976 he played sporadically with JB Hutto , Lil 'Ed and Cub Koda and recorded records, but remained in the shadow of Chicago's other blues greats until his death in 1999.
