Brigade diary

The brigade diary (or brigade diary) should be a literary and documentary representation of the development of a work collective in the GDR .

Mainly it should reflect the common efforts to fulfill the obligations in the “socialist” competition for the “honorary title” collective of socialist work . In doing so, individual or several authors recorded the successes and obstacles in the fulfillment of tasks in the brigade diary. However, the changes in the thinking and acting of the brigade members or the collective should also be shown and the highlights in the life of the brigade should be described.

The background to this concept should be to use the brigade diary as a means of self-understanding, upbringing and self-education in the work collective in order to contribute to the formation of “socialist behavior” and “collective relationships”. The content and form of the contributions should result from the experience of the brigade and the respective level of development and education of the authors.

The journalistic activities of the brigade members could range from the mere communication or note to the statistical compilation, the statement, the experience report to the portrait of a satirical glossary. The use of lyric forms could also be a legitimate representation. The description should include the moment of immediacy in order to make the presentation appear more effective.

The actual form of the contributions depended on the knowledge and skills of the diary writers. In order to improve the content, regular evaluations and field reports were carried out, which were organized by the trade union organization. Close cooperation with the aims of the writing workers' movement was also sought.
