As a student, he returns to the island to attend Ushio's funeral. His stepsister died in the sea. Shinpei meets younger Mio and his former classmate So Hishigata. From them he learns the circumstances of Ushio's death: There were seven of them on the empty beach with So's little sister Tokiko, Shiori Kobayakawa and their friends. When Shiori is aborted, Ushio swims out and saves her. But Ushio himself is found dead. The doctor said after the autopsy that he found strangulation marks, but the police do not believe the murder was due to the circumstances. Shiori has been in shock since the incident and no longer speaks. The next day, Shiori's parents also disappear without a trace.
