The spectacle galago ( Galago matschiei , Syn . : G. inustus ) is a primate species from the Galagos family (Galagonidae).
features
Spectacle galagos reach a head body length of 15 to 20 centimeters, which is also a 20 to 28 centimeter long tail. The weight is 170 to 250 grams. Their fur is colored a dark red-gray on the back, the belly is lighter. The eyes, which are enlarged to adapt to the nocturnal lifestyle, are surrounded by noticeable dark circles. The ears are also enlarged, they are hairless and very mobile.
distribution and habitat
Spectacle galagos live in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as well as in the neighboring regions of Uganda , Rwanda and Burundi . Their habitat are tropical primary and secondary forests .
Way of life
Like all Galagos, these primates are nocturnal, during the day they sleep in leaf nests or tree hollows. At night they go in search of food, while they move vertically climbing and jumping and rather stay in the lower layers of the trees. Their diet consists mainly of insects and tree sap.
Danger
In parts of their distribution area, spectacled galagos are affected by forest clearing, but overall the species is often and according to the IUCN “not endangered” ( least concern ).
