Bristol and Portishead Pier and Railway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bristol and Portishead Pier and Railway was a Somerset railway company in England .

By 1846 the Portbury Pier and Railway had a plan to build a railway line from Bristol to the seashore. This plan was not implemented.

On June 29, 1863, the Bristol and Portishead Pier and Railway was founded, following the previous plans to build a pier in Portishead and to build a railway line from the Bristol and Exeter Railway line in Bedminster Downs to Portbury. The 16 kilometer long 2.14 meter wide gauge line was opened on April 12, 1867. On July 5, 1879, the port was put into operation. The pier later served as a stopover for ocean liners.

After the takeover of B&ER by the Great Western Railway in 1876 , GWR carried out operations on the line. With effect from July 1, 1884, the company was finally taken over by the Great Western.
