Dam accident in June 2006

The Campos Novos Dam was built in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina between August 2001 and July 2006 on the Rio Canoas , a tributary of the Río Uruguay . The 202 m high dam near Campos Novos is probably the third highest of this type ( CFRD  = concrete faced rockfill dam ) on earth. It is also the highest dam in Brazil.

The construction cost was $ 671 million. The dam is part of a hydropower complex that provides 880 MW of electrical power. There is a second dam further below, and together they hold more than two billion cubic meters of water.

The 35-year concession to build and operate Campos Novos was granted in 1998 to Enercan, a consortium made up of the Brazilian CPFL Energia with 48.7%, the Brazilian aluminum producer CBA with 22.7%, the metallurgy company CNT with 20% state company Rio Grande do Sul with 6.5% and Santa Catarina Celesc with 2%.

The construction company was led by the Brazilian company Camargo Correa and the consulting engineers Engevix. The project was financed by the Inter-American Development Bank and the Brazilian state National Bank for Economic and Social Development.

On June 20, 2006 there was an accident in which all the water leaked out of the dam through a fracture point. People were not harmed. The damage was repaired in November 2006 and the reservoir was filled again by March 1, 2007. The last of the three generators went into operation on April 30, 2007.
