British India Steam Navigation Company

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The British India Steam Navigation Company , also British India Line , was a British liner shipping company . It existed from 1856 to 1971.

history

The company was first registered in 1856 as Calcutta & Burmah Steam Navigation Company . 1862 which operated shipping company as British India Steam Navigation Company Ltd . In 1886 British India took over the Australian Steam Navigation Company with their coastal services from Brisbane . Together with a company of five ships taken over in 1912, it became Australasian United SN Co. Apcar & Co, Calcutta. Another five ships were added when the Australian shipping company Archibald Currie was taken over in 1913.

Although the British India Steam Navigation Company was merged with the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) in 1914 , both the ships and their shipping company retained their independence until 1971.

The Nourse Line, which was taken over by British India in 1917, continued to appear as its own shipping company. Other companies that British India took over were the Strick Line in 1919 and the Asiatic Steam Navigation Company in 1935, in which, however, only a majority stake was acquired.

When P&O was reorganized into general cargo shipping, passenger services and bulk cargo transport in 1971, all controlled shipping companies and ships were quickly integrated into the new structure, which also meant the end of the British India Steam Navigation Co. (British India Line).
