The British Defense Staff - US (formerly known as the British Joint Staff Mission ) is the British military mission to the United States . The British Joint Staff Mission was established in Washington, DC during World War II to represent British interests to the Combined Chiefs of Staff in the event that the British Chiefs of Staff Committee was unable to attend meetings of the Combined Chiefs of Staff. The Joint Staff Mission was a tripartite organization that included Field Marshal Sir John Dill , Field Marshal Sir Henry Maitland Wilson and Admiral Sir James Fownes Somerville , among others .
