British Retail Consortium
The British Retail Consortium (or BRC ) is a trade association of British retail companies founded in 1992 . Its head office is in London , there is a regional association in Scotland and a representative office for the EU in Brussels .
tasks
The association represents the interests of its members towards governments, authorities and EU institutions. Their tasks consist first of all in classic lobbying work : the representatives of the British Retail Consortium influence legislation, for example in matters of fire protection or raising minimum wages in order to avoid costs for its members. The British Retail Consortium collects and publishes information, for example on price developments in retail. It also runs retail-related campaigns on individual topics such as crime, environmental protection and healthy eating.
The organization defines the rules for suppliers in the food industry, such as the BRC Global Standard and the BRCGS (for manufacturers of packaging materials for primary food packaging) as well as BRC Consumer Products, which are set as binding by several retail chains .
Practical meaning
Domestic and foreign food producers who produce private labels for the influential British retail chains (Tesco, Marks & Spencer etc.) are in fact forced to obtain BRC certification, otherwise no business can be made. In Germany, the BRC certification is carried out by accredited certifiers, e.g. B. Intertek , the German Society for the Certification of Quality Management Systems ( DQS ) or the IFTA AG Berlin.
