history

The Broad Ripple High School was founded in Broad Ripple in 1886 and started operating with seven students. At the turn of the century, the school fell victim to a fire, but was immediately rebuilt. In the following years, more courses were added to the offer and the number of students rose continuously. In 1923, the school was incorporated into the Indianapolis Public Schools when Indianapolis incorporated the previously independent town of Broad Ripple into the city. The school continued to grow during the 30's and 40's. During the 1960s, Broad Ripple High School was the premier urban school in Indianapolis. Formerly a school of white middle class, Broad Ripple was in the 70s after the abolition of racial segregation because many white families moved to a school with a black majority, to the suburbs.

Later the campus consisted of four buildings, all of which were connected to one another. The school was divided into four “Small Schools” and housed the magnet program for the humanities and art.

School closes

Due to declining student enrollments and poor performance, IPS decided in June 2017 to close the school at the end of the 2017/2018 school year. Arlington High School and Northwest High School have also closed. All seven high schools in the district were designed for 15,000 students, but there were only 5,000 enrollments. Over the course of 50 years, the number of pupils has fallen from over 100,000 to 30,000. The school is planning to reopen.
