Brockenteich

The Brockenteich was a still water that was located below the mountain top of the Brocken in the Harz Mountains in the county of Wernigerode in what is now the Harz district until 1744 . He was on his to Heinrichshöhe about conducting saddle (about 1030  m above sea level.  NN ) and is still in the terrain easy to recognize by always boggy ground. The Brocken Railway is located a few meters northwest of the former Brocken pond .

In a letter written on August 12, 1744 on the Großer Brocken, Count Heinrich Ernst zu Stolberg-Wernigerode reports to his father Christian Ernst in Wernigerode : “That yesterday evening we drained the famous Brockenteich in 1½ hour, also starting with the marking out of some peat houses made, but all of them, on which 3 fractions make 9, really worked with 3 carpenters, so that they built this autumn, arrived in winter, etc. can be directed to spring […]. Today we will continue with the staking out, including two stone houses, for the sake of their workers. "
