Fracture surface

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fractured surfaces are the new surfaces that are exposed on the fragments of a previously whole.

The reason for an - in particular an unwanted - break can often be determined on the basis of the nature of the fracture surfaces. The breakage and damage mechanism can be inferred from the surface structure of a fracture surface. The color of the fracture surfaces can indicate previous damage , e.g. B. Oxidation of metal surfaces as a sign of an earlier but undetected crack or other material fatigue .
