Fountain on Love Street

The fountain in the Love Street is a fountain in the Scottish town of Paisley in the Council Area Renfrewshire . In 1980 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest category A took place in 2006.

history

The park in which the fountain is located to this day was neglected towards the middle of the 19th century. Thomas Coats bought the land and had the park prepared. In addition to the central fountain, Coats also had cast iron lanterns and benches erected, and ornate fences installed. The fountain is one of the few surviving pieces of this work today. Coats then handed the park over to the town of Paisley and donated an additional £ 5,000 to maintain it. The cost of building the fountain was £ 15,000.

In 2008 the well was added to the Scotland List of Endangered Structures. The condition of the structure was last described in 2012 as poor, but with a low risk. In the same year, Historic Scotland made around £ 168,000 available for restoration. However, the total cost is estimated at £ 660,000. Additional funds were made available in the following years by the Heritage Lottery Fund , Historic Scotland and the Unitary Authority Renfrewshire. The restoration work started in August 2013.
