Brusselstown Hillfort
Brusselstown Hillfort (also called Brusselstown Ring ) is located in Kiltegan east of Baltinglass, southwest of the Wicklow Mountains National Park on Spinans Hill in County Wicklow in Ireland .
Barry Raftery (1944–2010) examined 40 single and multiple walled systems on the island (around 80 are known) and divided these hill forts into three classes:
- Class 1: Simply walled systems made of earth or stone with or without a ditch.
- Class 2: Systems with extensive, multiple walls on hills or cliffs.
- Class 3: Inland Promontory Forts
Brusselstown Hillfort is one of the largest Class 1 Hillforts in the country with 129 hectares. Its north-west-south-east oriented, sunken stone wall encloses an oval area of 320 × 200 m. The granite stone wall, which is only one meter high, is between five and twelve meters wide and is not supplemented by a ditch. Excavations on the site revealed activity well into the late Iron Age . The interior has a plurality of raised outcrops of limestone and some Hut locations.
