In bark beetles and other insects, traces on the plant tissue, usually in the bark or in the wood, caused by gnawing activity are referred to as feeding pattern or breeding pattern . Due to the species-characteristic shape, a feeding picture is often sufficient to determine the cause.

Bark beetle

Some bark beetle species got their German name from the shape of these feeding pictures.

The young pine shoots hollowed out during the ripening and regeneration feeding of the small and large forest gardeners often break off, so that heavily infested tree tops look like they have been pruned and have given the beetle its name.

Also noticeable are the breeding patterns created in the wood or under the bark for the purpose of reproduction, which are often visible even after years. The system of shelters , mother and larval passages give the characteristic shape. The printer's brood image resembles an open book with written (printed) lines. The brood pattern of the engraver is somewhat similar to an engraving.
