history

The hill was a place of execution with a gallows ; In 1512 two men were hanged, including a Dortmund man, which led to a conflict between Lünen and the city of Dortmund . The Dortmunders were so angry that they felled the gallows and what was hanged from it. The cremation of another man is reported to have deceived people by banishing spirits.

In 1543/44 a dispute over the Landwehr between Lünen and Dortmund escalated . The Lüner insisted on their claim that had existed since 1336/40 when Lünen was moved from the north to the south bank of the Lippe. The Dortmunders opposed the fact that the Landwehr was built on their territory. In the end, it was decided in favor of Lünens, and the Landwehr remained in place despite recurring disputes. Today the Landwehr no longer exists. The location of the place of execution can no longer be determined.

The Buchenberg was not mentioned in later times. What role he played in the following centuries remains unclear. In the 20th century there was a facility of the Bochum company Harpener Bergbau AG, of which no visible traces have been preserved.

On the south side of the Buchenberg there is a steep edge. The Flume brickworks used to be located there, which also used the soils of the beech mountain for burning bricks. In addition to residential buildings and industrial settlements, the Datteln-Hamm Canal and the city harbor are visible. The mountain is criss-crossed by several ditches on the east side. Up to the (flat) plateau it's pretty uphill. From the west side (from Welschenkamp) the Buchenberg as such can no longer be made out, as the ramp of the Dortmunder Straße keeps the mountain covered. It is difficult to see the mountain from the Kupferstrasse in the north. Here is a small settlement in the vicinity of the copper smelter .
