The Uholka-Schyrokyj Luh protected area is located in Transcarpathia (also Carpathian Ukraine ) and is part of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve . It contains the world's largest contiguous primeval beech forest ( Fagus sylvatica ), around 9,000 hectares. Parts of these primeval beech forests were placed under protection as early as 1920. The reserve has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992 , and was expanded to include other European primeval beech forests and old beech forests in 2007/2011. Uholka-Schyrokyj Luh is the subject of nature research and the jungle was first inventoried in 2010 in a Ukrainian-Swiss project. A change inventory is planned for 2019. In addition, a research area of 200 by 500 m (10 hectares) was created in Mala Uholka in 2001.

Inventory results

The Uholka-Schyrokyj Luh receiving area comprises 10,300 hectares of forest, 8800 of which are primeval forest, the rest is natural forest. All trees with a diameter of 6 cm or more ( BHD ) were measured on 314 test areas of 500 m 2 each . 97% are beeches, the oldest of which are no more than 500 years old. Of the 6779 living sample trees, the thickest was an elm with 150 cm BHD, the thickest beech had 140 cm BHD. There are 10 beech trees with a diameter of at least 80 cm per hectare. The trunk number of living trees is 435 N / ha, the base area 36.6 m 2 / ha and the volume 582 m 3 / ha. In addition, 163 m 3 / ha of standing and lying dead wood were determined. The vertical structure of the forest is predominantly three-layered, and gaps in the canopy are usually hardly larger than the crown of a dominant tree.
