The Carpathian Biosphere Reserve , Ukrainian Biosfernyj reserwat Karpaty ( Біосферний резерват Карпати ; English Carpathian Biosphere Reserve , CBR) is one of the largest protected areas of Ukraine , and since 1992 by the UNESCO as a biosphere reserve recognized.

The area is located in the southwest of Ukraine, in the border area with Romania and Hungary . The reserve area currently consists of eight sub-areas. In 2002 the nature reserve covered an area of ​​53,630  hectares .

More than 80% of this area is forested. This includes the last red beech-virgin forests , which since 2007 as beech and Ancient Beech Forests of the Carpathians recognized world heritage site are. These areas are:

  • Tschornohora - 2,477 ha, founded in 1968 (1912) (high Montaner mixed primeval beech forest with conifers, last habitat of the mink )
  • Kusij / Trybuschany - 1,370 ha, founded in 1990 (oak-beech forests, warmth-loving flora)
  • Maramoros - 2,244 ha, founded in 1990 (1907) (primeval forests of fir and beech)
  • Uholka-Schyrokyj Luh - 11,860 ha, founded in 1968 (world's largest contiguous location of primeval red beech forests)
  • Swydiwez - 3,031 ha, founded in 1997 (highest distribution area of ​​pure beech forest stands within the world natural heritage)

All the natural and climatic zones of the Ukrainian Carpathians are represented in the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve : both the plains characteristic of the foothills and the subalpine and alpine zones. The lowest point is 170 m above sea level. M. in the Narcissus Valley . The highest point is also the highest mountain in Ukraine, the 2061 m high Hoverla .

The center of Europe was marked with a monument , which is located in the reserve area in Dilowe , about twelve kilometers south of the city of Rakhiv . Rakhiv is also the administrative seat of the biosphere reserve.
