Buena Vista (Pecos County, Texas)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Buena Vista was a place in Pecos County in the US state of Texas . Buena Vista is now a ghost town .

geography

Buena Vista was in west Texas, 18 kilometers southeast of Imperial in northern Pecos County near Farm Road 11. The place was 775 meters above sea level and had no bodies of water.

history

In 1909 real estate speculators bought land on the projected route of the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway, then under construction . In the same year the Orient Hotel was built and in 1910 Buena Vista was given a post office. The central railway connection to larger markets was advertised and plots in the town center and plots for farms were sold. Buena Vista had a bank, school and church. In 1913, however, the railway line was built past Buena Vista on a more direct route between Girvin and Fort Stockton . The project to found a city had failed. In 1925 there were still around 50 people living in Buena Vista. Due to the scarcity of water, agricultural use of the area was not economical in the long term. In the 1950s the place was completely abandoned.
