The "Leipzig School of Natural Sciences - Building with Molecules and Nano-objects" BuildMoNa is a graduate school at the University of Leipzig . It serves the structured, interdisciplinary training of doctoral students in the fields of physics , chemistry and biosciences . The BuildMoNa graduate school was founded in November 2007 as part of the federal and state excellence initiative and is a class at the Research Academy Leipzig . Up to 100 doctoral students are members of BuildMoNa.

Research areas

The abbreviation BuildMoNa stands for "Building with Molecules and Nano-objects", ie "Building with molecules and nano-objects". This represents the scientific content of the graduate school and the area in which the doctoral students research together with the supervising professors. Scientific objectives include the production and investigation of novel forms of matter that follow the construction principles of active, living matter. Self-organization processes are preferably used in order to produce these complex materials from smaller components such as molecules, scaffolds and nanostructures, which have a wide range of applications ( bottom-up approach). Some of the fields of application that are being worked on together with industrial partners, many of them in central Germany, are selective catalysts , biosensors , cell manipulation, artificial tissue, nanophotonics and photovoltaics .

PhD training

The aim of the structured doctoral training is to obtain a doctorate with the degree Dr. rer. nat. to obtain. In addition to their research activities, the doctoral students are systematically informed about interdisciplinary aspects and links in research in physics, chemistry and biosciences in teaching modules and are introduced to the preparation of publications in international science journals. Further offers are industrial internships at partner companies, stays abroad, visits to international conferences and key qualification modules.
