The Bulgarian Orthodox Old Calendar Church ( Bulgarian Българската православна старостилна църква ) is an Old Calendar Orthodox Church in Bulgaria . It is not recognized by most of the Orthodox churches.

Structures

The church is organized in a diocese. Its seat is in Sofia . It has two monasteries, 18 churches and four chapels. According to its own information, it includes around 70,000 believers.

The Bulgarian Orthodox Old Calendar Church is in church and Eucharistic fellowship with the Orthodox Old Calendar Church of Romania and the Church of the True Christians of Greece (Chrysostomos Synod) .

It follows the Julian calendar . The liturgy is held in the Byzantine rite in Church Slavonic .

history

In 1968 the Bulgarian Orthodox Church introduced the New Julian calendar in place of the Julian calendar. This provoked resistance in parts of the Orthodox believers. In 1990 a separate eparchy Sofia of the Greek Old Calendar Church, Holy Synod in Resistance, was formed. In 1993 the independent Bulgarian Orthodox Old Calendar Church emerged from this .

From 1994 to 2006 there was also a church fellowship with the Russian Orthodox Church abroad . In 2006 the Bulgarian Orthodox Old Calendar Church canonized the Batak Martyrs of 1876.
