The Bummert is an old, rural house shape that can only be found in East Frisia . The house type was designed as a semi-detached house for two farm worker families and was noticeable for its cost-saving construction. For this purpose, the two semi-detached houses were assembled on the inner gable by a central wall with a shared chimney. On both sides of the central wall, the living rooms with normal high brick walls were initially connected. This is followed by the utility rooms or stables, the roofs of which on the outer gable were fully hipped and pulled down to save bricks.

Houses of this type were built from the middle of the 19th century. Only around 40 houses are left in East Frisia. The only one of its kind is located on an island on the island of Baltrum and is now used as the “Old Customs House” museum.
