history

On October 18, 1925, delegates from 20 graduate associations of German building schools and building trade schools founded the “German Building School Association” as a professional association of building school graduates in order to pursue common goals for their status and their professions. After the federal government had campaigned for their own professional title for half a decade, the graduates of the building schools and building trade schools received the legally protected qualification as master builders through the master builder ordinance of April 1, 1931 issued by the Reich Minister of Economics. Until then, only building school graduates from the southern German states added a completed course of five semesters and one year of practical experience the designation master builder. The porters were not tied to a single trade, did not need their own business, could plan, prepare construction sites, coordinate and monitor the construction process, accept and account for the building - as self-employed , as employees and in the authority. The prerequisite was that the graduates took the final exam at a construction school and passed a state-recognized exam after at least five years.

At the annual conference in Berlin in 1931 the name was changed to the Reich Association of German Builders and Graduates of Higher Technical Educational Institutions . After the dissolution of the association in 1936, the extended main board of the former German master builder association came together for a working session for the first time in 1949. In 1959, the federal government decided to expand its name to include the Association of German Builders, Architects and Engineers in order to match the structure of its members and the professional field of engineers in the construction industry.

organization

The association is divided into 16 regional associations and 140 district groups. The most important organs of the BDB are the delegates 'assembly, which formulates the association and professional policy goals every two years at the German Builders' Day, the half-yearly federal board and the five-member presidium. Members of the BDB are all architects and engineers working in construction who have completed a degree at a university, a university of applied sciences or a comparable state-recognized university. Students from the relevant departments are accepted into the association as equal members. The interests of young professionals are represented by an elected student advisor for students and young graduates on the federal board. The chairman is Christoph Schild. Martin Wittjen is the general manager.

goals and tasks

The activities are based on the idea of the construction team: the cooperative, interdisciplinary interaction of architects, civil engineers and entrepreneurs in the planning, preparation and execution of construction projects, in the interests of the client and consumer protection. This includes ensuring the quality of construction in all areas, promoting technical and professional training of the members through training events and representing the interests of BDB members in all relevant professional, educational and socio-political issues. In addition, professional policy discussions take place regularly between high-ranking BDB representatives and political decision-makers. Through the exchange in the district groups and the regional associations, the members contribute their expertise in the reformulation and revision of laws and regulations relevant to building or professional policy. In doing so, they also shape the policy of the chambers of architects and engineers in the federal states and at the federal level. With annual themes, the BDB sets thematic priorities, which are thematically deepened in the yearbook and at the builders' day. Ideas competitions, information and discussion evenings as well as architectural short trips serve to promote the professional development of the next generation of students.

Prices

The association and its member magazine DBZ - Deutsche Bauzeitschrift sponsor the Balthasar Neumann Prize . It is advertised every two years, was first awarded in 1994 and is endowed with € 10,000. The Balthasar Neumann Prize honors the exemplary, innovative collaboration between architects and civil engineers from various disciplines on a building that goes beyond technically established standards and which, as a result of this cooperation, in the spirit of Balthasar Neumann, has outstanding technical and design qualities and an energetically optimized one Concept. One focus here is the collaboration with the TGA engineers in order to create an energetically optimized concept. Overall, the Balthasar Neumann Prize should meet the parameters of sustainable building. In addition to the socio-cultural requirements, the technical aspects such as B. Energy and resource consumption assessed over the entire life cycle.

The BDB student sponsorship award recognizes the performance of students every two years who show exemplary solutions in the areas of buildings, engineering structures, constructions and urban planning for the development of today's construction. The BDB provides a total of 5,200 euros for two sponsorship awards and one special award. The next award will take place in 2019.
