history

In the 18th century the first trade associations were established in Bavaria , in which local interests were represented by traders. In the middle of the 19th century there was a wave of local trade associations. This took place out of the growing democratic understanding and against the background of a strengthening middle class . In 1874 the Association of Bavarian Trade Associations was founded in Nuremberg , the forerunner of the BDS Bavaria.

After the First World War , the Association of Bavarian Trade Associations merged with the Bavarian Crafts Association , founded in 1883 , or the Bavarian Craftsmen and Trades Federation - both of which were founded by the General Trade Association in Munich - to form the Bavarian Trade Federation . During the National Socialist era , the Bavarian Trade Association was dissolved in 1934.

After the Second World War, local trade associations were founded again from 1948, for example in Munich, where the general trade association was revived. In 1951, members of the general trade association Munich the German Trade Association eV as a national association based in Munich. Five years later, the German Trade Association, Landesverband Bayern eV was founded together with other trade and industry associations.

In 1999 in Nuremberg the name was changed to Bund der Selbständig / Deutscher Gewerbeverband, Landesverband Bayern eV This took into account the general structural change, because more and more companies and freelance professions no longer count themselves as "trade" in the classic sense. In 2008 in Munich it was decided to rename the Association to the Association of Self-Employed Persons - Gewerbeverband Bayern eV (BDS Bayern).

Organization and structure

The BDS Bavaria is divided into the nine district associations Munich, Upper Bavaria-West, Upper Bavaria-East, Lower Bavaria, Upper Palatinate, Upper Franconia, Middle Franconia, Lower Franconia and Swabia. Below the district level, the BDS Bayern is represented with over 16,000 members in 540 cities and communities in the Free State.

The management of the BDS Bayern is incumbent on a voluntarily elected presidium. Honorary president since April 2010 was the Munich entrepreneur and former president of BDS Bayern, Fritz Wickenhäuser († 2020). The state committee, in which the district associations of the BDS Bavaria are represented, approves the budget and makes decisions on fundamental issues. The highest organ is the General Assembly, which meets annually. This is made up of the delegates of the local associations or affiliated trade associations. Michael Forster is the general manager. BDS Bayern has two offices in Munich and Nuremberg.

Members

The majority of the 36-year-old member companies are family-owned. 93 percent of the entrepreneurs run the business themselves, almost 80 percent in the legal form of a sole proprietorship or a partnership. The companies employ an average of 15 people, with one-man companies and small businesses with up to nine employees making up around two thirds.

The members are on average 50 years old and 85 percent male. 42 percent of the members received their training in secondary school, followed by vocational training (71 percent), which for many resulted in a master's degree. Around a third of them have completed their university entrance qualification at a university or a technical college.

Every second member company is based in Upper Bavaria. The Franks , Eastern Bavaria and Swabia follow one another relatively closely. The classic sectors such as handicrafts and trade (around 30 percent each) still have a high weight, although services (liberal professions) and tourism together already represent the largest group of members.
